Marine & Cargo Insurance

Protects your goods in road, air, sea and rail transit, from loading to delivery.

Marine & Cargo Insurance

Cargo insurance covers loss of or damage to your goods between the point of loading and the point of delivery. A carrier's liability is capped and rarely reflects the real value of the goods; a cargo policy closes that gap.

For exporters and importers we arrange open-cover (floating) policies: instead of a policy per shipment, you hold an annual contract and declare each consignment. We choose the level of cover (total loss only, restricted or all risks) with you, comparing insurers' offers for your type of goods and route.

What is covered?

  • Collision, overturning and road accident damage in transit
  • Fire, explosion, landslide, flood and bridge collapse
  • Damage during loading, transhipment and unloading
  • Sinking, stranding and general average at sea
  • Total loss: complete loss of the goods together with the conveyance
  • All risks cover (Institute Cargo Clauses A)
  • Theft and total loss by theft (depending on cover level)

Optional add-on covers

  • Open cover contracts
  • Domestic carrier's liability policies (with the truck clause)
  • Transit of valuables such as jewellery, gold and cash
  • War and strike clauses
  • Profit and customs duty cover

What you should know

Scope is usually defined by Institute Cargo Clauses A/B/C, A being the widest and C the narrowest. Domestic transit offers total-loss, restricted and all-risks options.

The sum insured is usually invoice value + freight + 10% anticipated profit.

We check your Incoterms to establish whether buyer or seller carries the insurance obligation. Carrier's liability policies usually exclude theft from an unattended vehicle and wetting; we explain the conditions to you up front.
